Germán Valderrama

Coach

German Valderrama a National Foil and Sabre champion in his native Colombia was greatly influenced by his Hungarian coach Maestro Sandor Lengel who taught him the basics of fencing. Also, he had French Maitre Dominique Solari. Years later and with this same Master Solari German studied his first year of the Fencing Master Program at the Central American Fencing School located in Guatemala and sponsored by the FIE. German won a scholarship to do the second year and finish the program in the Ecole Nationale de Maitre d’Armes in Dinard-France where he graduated and received his Diploma as a Fencing Master in 1989.

As a fencer he participated in South and Central American championships as well as world cups in Cuba and France. In 1997 became international referee category B in all three weapons and officiated in world cups and all NAC and US Summer Nationals.

In 2000 he moved to the US. In this country he has achieved outstanding results with some of his students such as Aaron Adjemian 1st place at a Cadet Men’s Epee NAC, Alexie Rubin 3rd at the Junior Olympics, Oriana Isacsson, Top 8 Junior Summer Nationals, and more recently with Joey Rafidi in Cadet and Junior Men’s Epee. He explains his quality as a good epee coach by the instruction received from 2 different sources: French Maitre Roland Guiness in Dinard and Ukrainian Maestro Feodor Kota in Bogota.

German’s philosophy of coaching is based in the combination of two aspects. The first is to provide his students with an enjoyable practice that motivate them to keep coming to fence. The second is the adequate teaching of the fencing technique; this aspect is for him a key factor in the earliest learning stages that determines future success. “I don’t know what can be worst if learning without having fun or enjoy doing something without getting a positive apprenticeship from it”. And German applies this principle for himself. Being fencing his passion, he believes that he has still a lot to learn not only in the physical and technical aspect of the sport but in the mental. With a BS in Psychology German is now pursuing a Master at CSULB in Kinesiology with emphasis in Sport Psychology.
