Although certainly not a replacement for instruction from a qualified fencing
center, books on fencing will help complement the training you are already
receiving. However, the quality of fencing literature varies a great
deal. The purpose of this section is to identify some of the more useful fencing
books currently available. Each reference will contain:
 | A short editorial summary on the content and quality of the text |
 | A description of the recommended audience: beginner, intermediate, or
advanced fencer |
 | An over-all rating of the text using a "5 star" method, as
follows:
     |
Quality content that is both relevant and
topical. Writing is clear and easy to understand. A
solid buy. |
    |
Lots of quality content, but may not be entirely
relevant. Writing may not be as clear and
well-structured. Worth adding to your collection. |
   |
Although a substantial amount of useful information,
there is a lot of incorrect/outdated information. Be sure to
bring this book to your instructor before you read - they will be
able to identify the quality parts of the text. |
  |
Mostly outdated or irrelevant content - very little
value to a modern competitive fencer. May contain interesting
historical content. Don't buy this book unless you are just
looking to expand your fencing library. |
 |
Virtually worthless to both the modern competitive
fencer and the fencing book collector. Poorly written and
largely inaccurate. Don't buy this book. If you received
it as a gift, be sure to ask for the receipt. |
