Introductory Classes are designed to introduce you to the sport of fencing and give you the basic fundamentals you will need to start fencing. All classes cover basic footwork, handwork, and distance control with an introduction to tactics and timing. Often considered one of the Western martial arts, fencing is probably unlike any other sport you have done before. It takes time and patience to master but when you succeed the satisfaction will be worth every minute.
We offer introductory classes in foil and the average student trains at the introductory level for 2 to 4 months. Introductory classes are offered several times each week and the student can choose the two dates and times that best suites their schedule at the beginning of each month. Membership and equipment rentals are included in the price of the class. If you wish, equipment can be purchased; we have a full-service store on site for your needs.
Youth Development Program: This program is designed for younger fencers (7-9 years old) and no previous fencing experience is required. This on-going course includes developmental activities and games that are designed to build a solid foundation of athleticism, coordination, technical ability and tactical understanding in preparation for higher level fencing. Developmental activities will be complemented by basic fencing actions using youth weapons. This course is designed to be both fun and engaging for the kids!
Home Program School:This program is designed specifically for home-schooled students who wish to train together. Scheduled earlier in the afternoon, this program will introduce the fundamentals of the sport and guide the student through the beginning and intermediate levels of fencing. We are an accredited vendor with several home school programs; if we are not associated with your school please let us know.
Intermediate Weapon classes are specific to each weapon and designed for the individual who has either completed the introductory class or has previous fencing experience. The intermediate weapon classes include more in-depth training in tactics and strategy along with introducing additional techniques. These classes will build on your knowledge and prepare you for higher levels.
Mixed Recreational Foil: This class is design for those interested in an intermediate foil class but would like a weekend-only class. This class meets once per week on Saturdays and is otherwise similar to the Intermediate Weapon classes.
Women's Recreational Foil: Like the Mixed Recreational Foil class, this is an intermediate foil class that meets once per week on Saturday mornings but is for adult women. Students will learn and develop their fencing skills while increasing fitness, coordination and flexibility.
Competitive Program: is designed for the serious fencer who is interested in taking their fencing to the next level. All students are expected to have a solid command of basic hand and footwork and be ready for a strong cardio-vascular workout, and they must have the prior approval of a South Coast Fencing Center instructor. This is a higher intensity class that includes strength, speed and endurance training with a focus on competitive bouting, strategy and tactics for today's game. All competitive level classes are taught using electric equipment and students must provide their own electric gear. Students are expected to commit to attending all sessions of this class.
Footwork Class: This class is a supplemental training for those already enrolled in a course at the center. Meeting on Saturday mornings, this intense training will strengthen your body, hone your technique and build your stamina. Effective movement is the cornerstone to fencing and this class will improve your game.
Conditioning Program: This program is also a supplemental training for those already enrolled in a course at the center. The program focuses on overall athletic development and will specifically target improvements in speed, agility, strength and balance. Students have the option of taking the class once or twice per week.
