SCFC Foil Circuit Challenge kicks off!

The 2010-2011 season is just around the corner and SCFC will be kicking off the season with the SCFC Foil Circuit Challenge series of events!  This circuit consists of 10 open foil tournaments held at the center - one per month - between September 2010 and June 2011.  Fencers entering these tournaments will earn points towards the overall circuit winner for the season.  These events are open to all foilists, regardless of age or experience level, and are designed to give you valuable tournament practice in a fun and local environment.

The tournaments are not USFA-sanctioned, which means that you do not need to be a member of the United States Fencing Association in order to compete.  The entry fee is $2 and the winner for that night takes home half of all registration fees.  The other half is saved in a pool for the overall season winner, who will be awarded in June 2011.

The first event for the season starts on Friday, September 10th.  Pre-registration is not required but you must be at the center before 7:30pm to check in!

Referee Clinic with Derek Cotton

SCFC will be hosting a referee training clinic with Derek Cotton.  Mr. Cotton has refereed at the highest levels of our sport, including World Championships and the Olympic Games.  He will be presenting material to help you understand not only how to referee in our sport but how to better understand the rules as a fencer!

Even if you do not have aspirations of refereeing at the higher levels of fencing, you will often be called upon to referee bouts at club and local tournaments.  During this seminar, you will learn about rules, how to interpret and call actions and what you should be concentrating on while refereeing.  You will also learn valuable information that you can use as a fencer to protect your own actions when the referee may make a mistake during a competition!

The fee for the clinic is $75 and it will be held at SCFC.  Plan to be at the center by 8:30am on Sunday, September 12th.  For those who wish to take the written tests to become a referee, plan on being at the center until 5:30pm.  Please remember that this is NOT a test preparation course - you should read the rulebook before you attend the clinic!  If you want to take the written tests, download the referee study guide from the FOC's website at www.fencingofficials.org.
