Photo Gallery - Construction

Only 18 months after moving into our first building in Tustin, we have outgrown our space! We are very proud to announce that the SCFC will be relocating to a new building that is a spacious 5,400 square feet - almost 3 times our current size! Currently in the process of building a new rubber-sprung wood floor for our fencers, we hope to complete our move by early October. In the mean time, our current facility in Tustin remains open and active.

We have posted pictures from our new adventure. As this is strictly a volunteer effort, we need the help of our membership to make this a success. If you can help out during the build-out throughout the month of September, please let us know.

Here are some shots of the office area of our new salle:

We have shower facilities, too!

September 6-7, 2003 - Our first weekend of construction
Our first step was to build out the 2x4 framework, followed by the plywood flooring:
Some of our Saturday volunteers
Eric inspecting our lattice-work
Chris and his friend laying down the 2x4s on the east side
Tira worked tirelessly throughout the weekend (and baked us cookies!)

As we work across the salle
We begin laying down the plywood
Fun with the screw gun!
Every project starts with a good plan. Thanks to Mike Brown (our volunteer architect) for making this possible!
Our step-by-step plan of attack
Layed out clearly
Sunday saw us completing the lattice-work and about 1/3 of the flooring:
Adam and Jaime finish up the last available piece of plywood
...and put it into place
...while Louis finishes off the west side
Who's da man?!? You are, Jaime! You are!
Louis poses for the camera
Adam takes a break after a full day of work
September 13-14, 2003 - Our second weekend of construction
This weekend saw us painting the main lobby:
Adding our club colors and preparing the main wall for our logo
John and Ed busy at work
While Faith comes up with a great color for the announcement area
Lisa and Yasamin add the blue
...while supervisor Murel oversees the work
Greg and Elliott rest in the "time-out" room
And Rochelle works on our custom tack boards
Meanwhile, the rest of the crew is busy on the floor
Some of the group is busy puttying
While the oversight committee looks on
The last batch of boards has arrived
Stan and Bruce examine some of the edges
...and calculate our material requirements
Finally, the last(?) board is put in place!

Now, we're ready for the sanding | 2
Sunday evening, Brenden, Jaime and Stan single-handedly stained our new 2,400 square foot fencing floor:
It took a great deal of effort
No, really - a LOT of effort!
And we're quite proud of it
Finally, we left it to dry and wrapped up the weekend
September 17-29, 2003 - Wrapping up the construction
These last two weeks were used to complete the flooring and painting, as well as move everything over to our new facility

December, 2001 - The floor and dressing rooms - Weekend 1
Our blood, sweat, and tears went in to this floor. 1 2 3 4
Linda strikes a pose next to our lumber pile.
Rudy takes a moment to ponder the sweeter things in life.
His break over, Rudy gets back to work on the dry wall.
How many fencers does it take to load a nail gun?
Back in the office, Cathy and Gary are hard at work cleaning the fridge.
Cathy gives us a demonstration her amazing mental powers.
Linda caught taking a break while everyone else is hard at work.
Jeff, Brenden, and Dave inspecting the day's work.
After we lay all the flooring for the day, Jaime reinforces all the joints with extra screws.
And everyone gathers together for a couple of group shots. 1 2
And our work for the day is finished.
After your webmaster left his mark, everyone else left theirs as well. 1 2
After a hard days work, Linda, Louis, and Rudy bid us a fond farewell.

December, 2001 - The floor and dressing rooms - Weekend 2
Louis Finishes off the drywall with a bit of drywall paste.
Louis and Dave lay down the last panel of the floor.
A couple of screws and nails, and our floor is finally together.
And now I present to you, a complete fencing floor.
And everyone who was there at the end.

January, 2002 - The floor and dressing rooms - The finishing touches
After some back breaking work, we finally get 3 coats of varnish (or was it 4?) on the floor.
Our crew of, now highly trained, workers finish the floor by painting on the fencing strips and laying another three coats of varnish.
And we top things off with our completed dressing rooms.
